Glasgow Cathedral (St Mungo's or High) is creating a memorial recognising the long and distinguished tenure as their Minister of the late Very Rev William J Morris. The Kirk Session has agreed this should be acknowledged in the form of a window illustrating the theme of "The Tree of Jesse". In addition it is intended that background information will be made available for the Cathedral's many thousands of visitors, possibly in the form of a pamphlet as part of the Cathedral Guides' interpretative information.
Emma Butler-Cole Aitken, stained glass artist, has been selected and an initial design concept agreed. They now await a finished design (or cartoon, to use the artistic parlance) and the fine tuning of her quotation covering all of the creative and installation works.
The Cathedral is working with many stakeholders on this project, including Historic Environment Scotland, Glasgow City Council, the Church of Scotland General Trustees - Church Art and Architecture Committee, the Artist and her sub-contractors for the window's installation, the Kirk Session and Glasgow Presbytery.
Private donations received to date have been very generous. However, the Cathedral would like to set up a small contingency or guaranteed fund for any unforeseen complications causing last minute over-runs. If unused, such a fund's excess would be used to provide the pamphlet about the window for visitors, or alternatively returned to donors.
Glasgow Cathedral therefore requests that you give consideration to assisting with this final funding step as you would be part of this lasting memorial to an individual who served with such dedicated devotion, not only to the congregation of Glasgow Cathedral, but to the city and its wider community.
