Inverclyde school children enjoy a marine masterclass ahead of Scottish Grand Prix of the Sea

More than 230 primary school pupils from Inverclyde enjoyed a marine masterclass from Powerboat P1 and their environmental charity, P1 Marine Foundation ahead of another major event taking place on the River Clyde in Greenock this summer.

Returning after a successful first year, the educational tour expanded to include visits to three local primary schools – St Mary’s, Ardgowan and Inverkip – to educate youngsters aged 8-10 about the local environment, wildlife and the influence of the River Clyde within the community.

The visits were organised by Powerboat P1, who will host the second annual Scottish Grand Prix of the Sea in Greenock in June, a two-day festival event showcasing high-speed marine motorsport.

As part of the school visits, pupils were asked to create posters highlighting their favourite aspects of the River Clyde, with the best to be showcased at the P1 Scottish Grand Prix of the Sea on June 24th and 25th.

In addition to the presentation, the school children have been invited to take part in a guided tour of the official P1 pits at James Watt Dock on June 23rd led by P1 AquaX champion Duncan Johnstone.

The excursion will give the pupils an opportunity to learn more about P1 racing, meet some of the competitors and experience a behind-the-scenes look at the powerboats on show over the weekend.

Mhairi Crossan, Deputy Head Teacher at Inverkip Primary School said: “The feedback from our 3 classes who had the opportunity to receive the' P1 Discover the River Clyde Schools Visit' was extremely positive. The children enjoyed sharing, and expanding their knowledge of wildlife on the Clyde and marine environmental issues. The footage of last year's 'Grand Prix of the Sea' event has made them excited to attend this spectacular event this year.”

Marine motorsport fans across Scotland will be in for another dose of high-speed powerboat and Jet Ski action this summer when the P1 Scottish Grand Prix of the Sea returns to Greenock Esplanade for a second time on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 June, 2017.

Co-hosted by Riverside Inverclyde and Inverclyde Council with the support of EventScotland, part of VisitScotland’s Events Directorate, the free weekend event will be the second round of the four-venue P1 UK race series and is expected to attract tens of thousands of visitors with entertainment for all the family.
