City of Glasgow College will open its doors to aspiring seafarers at its annual Merchant Navy Open Day on Saturday 21 April.
The Open Day, aimed at those considering a maritime profession, is the biggest such event in Scotland, and one of the largest of its kind in the UK.
Many of Britain’s major shipping companies will be sending representatives, including staff involved in the recruitment of cadets and crew, to offer advice and guidance to prospective students looking to enrol at City of Glasgow College’s world-leading maritime campus.
Dr Nicola Crawford, Faculty Director for Nautical Studies at City of Glasgow College, said: “For aspiring seafarers, our annual Merchant Navy Open Day provides a crucial opportunity to meet face-to-face with the people who will help shape their future careers. Over the past few years, we’ve seen many people who have attended go on to secure the sponsorship they need and enrol here at the college.”
The Faculty of Nautical Studies boasts the latest technology at its award-winning Riverside campus. The building contains a fully-working engine room, an engine room simulator, and a range of ship handing simulators – one of which is Scotland’s first 360 degree full mission ship handling simulator.
Support staff and lecturers will also be on hand to talk to prospective students about the academic side of training. They will be joined by current officer cadets who will share first-hand their experience of both training and life as a cadet, at college and at sea.
Among the companies exhibiting will be Clyde Marine training, Anglo Eastern, Carnival, Chiltern Maritime, Princess Cruises, RFA, SSTG, and V-Ships. Two new companies, Shell and AW crewing, are new to the Open Day this year and will be recruiting cadets for the upcoming academic year.
In addition to the shipping companies, a range of other organisations will be present; including Women into Maritime, the Sea Cadets, Royal Navy Reserves, Royal Navy, and Careers at sea.
Scotland’s largest college looks forward to welcoming school leavers or individuals interested in a life at sea, and those considering a career change, to the event which will be held at the college’s Riverside campus from 9.30am to 3.30pm on Saturday 21 April.
