A Bishopbriggs-based firm renowned for its excellence and expertise in Health & Safety training won the Triumph Over Adversity Award at the FSB Celebrating Small Business Awards 2018 – supported by Business Gateway in Scotland – held on 23 January at Playfair Library in Edinburgh.
Pivotal Scotland, established by Andrew Monaghan, a chartered Health and Safety Practitioner, and his wife Sandra, has been trading since 2013. Their passion and excellence in training have resulted in the company’s quick growth, soon able to employ several other associate trainers. Trainer numbers have increased year on year to expand their areas of expertise and ability to train across the UK.
In 2015, Andrew was diagnosed as having Motor Neurone Disease. Since then Sandra has taken on the role of Director and been leading the company.
In the face of terminal illness, Andrew has refused to allow his health to interfere with his long-established passion for teaching and investment in the future of health and safety training. Andrew continues to mentor from home, learning to use eye-gaze software technology which enables him to write blog entries and build a social media presence.
The resilience both he and Sandra have shown in the face of such adversity has motivated the entire team, who have rallied in support. Not only does the team continue to nurture customer relationships, but it works hard to tailor training needs and meet bespoke requirements of many of the company’s customers, distinguishing it from rival training companies.
Sandra Monaghan, Director of Pivotal Scotland, said: “We are delighted to have received this award. From 2013, Andrew and I have strived to build a company with a reputation for excellent training, great customer service and inspired learners. 2017 in particular was a critical year for the company.
“Following Andrew’s MND diagnosis in 2015, he has proved inspirational to the team and is still a very active part of the company despite the progression of his disease. He now works from home using assistive technology, creating blogs and reaching out to people via Linkedin and other social media consistently helping to build our brand. His tenacity and positivity has proved inspirational to the whole Pivotal team. 2017 also saw the departure of our existing Sales Manager resulting in a legal case against her which is still ongoing.
“It has been a tough time for everyone involved with the business but we are now reaping the benefits of our new cohesive team. The award is a recognition of the hard work and effort that the team has put in over a difficult year and it has inspired us to keep moving forward, to grow and expand the business in the future.”
Hisashi Kuboyama, FSB’s development manager, said: “It is fantastic to see Sandra Monaghan and her team scooping the Triumph Over Adversity Award. They had a number of very strong competitors in the category from all over Scotland, so they should be proud of winning this prestigious award.
“Learning of the hardship following Andrew Monaghan’s illness and his determination to keep going is not only humbling but also inspiring. Andrew and Sandra have demonstrated that, with resilience, integrity and determination, you can turn things around in the midst of extremely tough and challenging times. The best of luck to the Pivotal Scotland team for the UK national award finals in May.
Commenting on the event, Hugh Lightbody, Chief Officer at the Business Gateway National Unit, said: “Business Gateway provides free practical help and advice to tens of thousands of businesses across the whole of Scotland no matter what stage they’re at in their business life cycle. Over the last 24 months the DigitalBoost programme has given SMEs even more reason to contact Business Gateway, providing them access to a suite of free resources to help them with their digital skills and expertise including 1:1 sessions, workshops, online guides, a digital healthcheck and online tutorials that can be accessed 24/7. The FSB and Business Gateway work closely in Scotland and we’re thrilled to be partnering with them to deliver these fantastic awards.”
The FSB Celebrating Small Business Awards celebrate the best small businesses from the length and breadth of the country, offering national recognition for those who have made the biggest impression over the last 12 months. Twelve area awards finals take place between January and March, with the national UK finals taking place at a VIP attended awards ceremony on 3 May in London.
The Scotland winners were announced at a ceremony at Playfair Library in Edinburgh on the afternoon of 23 January.
