City of Glasgow College professional cookery student, Kevin McCafferty, has been formally presented with his bronze trophy for taking third place in this year’s Young Chef Olympiad.
The international culinary competition, which took place in India in February, was reported to be the world's biggest culinary battle of student chefs.
The 22 year old was chosen to represent Scotland and his college at the competition which involved more than 40 countries from around the world.
The young chef, who is now working at Cail Bruich in Glasgow’s west end, was delighted to finally receive his trophy, saying:
“Being the only student chef representing Scotland was a very proud moment for me and to receive this trophy now is the icing on the cake.
“The competition was really intense but it was an incredible experience and definitely worth all the hours of training. Meeting so many excellent chefs from different backgrounds was very inspiring and encouraging.”
Ron Scott, Executive Director with the International Institute of Hotel Management and a member of the Young Chef Olympiad organising committee, presented Kevin with his trophy and said:
“The Young Chef Olympiad is a landmark event bringing together possibly the best student chefs in the culinary world to create unity through food. Our congratulations go to Kevin for an outstanding performance in what was the tightest competition since the inaugural event in 2015.”
The competition challenged students to show their culinary expertise by cooking dishes in a number of competitive rounds and they were accompanied by mentors to guide them throughout the course of competition. Senior chef lecturer at the college, Gary Maclean, accompanied the young chef and said:
“Kevin worked really hard and showed the world he could hold his own under pressure. I was delighted to be there to encourage Kevin who is a skilled chef and will go on to even bigger and better things.”
Roy Gardner, Executive Director for Corporate Development & Innovation at City of Glasgow College, said:
“We are delighted that Kevin secured a medal for both Scotland and City of Glasgow College. For a Scottish student to be in the top three best student chefs in the world is an incredible result and for him to now receive his own trophy is very well deserved.”
The third place accolade was shared by Kevin and Henry Lee from Hong Kong. Produced and run by the International Institute of Hotel Management, the event was held across Delhi, Bengaluru, Pune and Kolkata over a period of six days.
