Stuart Laing, executive chairman of Glasgow-based Laings Jewellers, has been awarded an OBE for almost 50 years of service to the UK jewellery industry, after being included in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.
Laings was opened in 1840 in Glasgow, with Stuart joining the family business in 1970, shortly after which he opened the company’s iconic showrooms in the Argyle Arcade. Today, Laings is one of largest independent jewellery businesses in the UK with three stores in Glasgow, two in Edinburgh, one in Cardiff and one in Southampton.
Alongside his integral role at Laings, Stuart also founded buying consortium Houlden Group, and created the Jewellers of Excellence brand, a hallmark of trust within the trade. He sat on the board of International Jewellery London and was a council member of the National Association of Jewellers, also working as the UK director of Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie, and serving as an advisor to Couture Europe.
Laings’ day-to-day operations are now managed by Stuart’s daughter Wendy and her husband, but he remains an executive chairman of the business.
Commenting on his inclusion on the Honours list, Stuart said, “I am proud and delighted, but also very humbled. Strengthening and creating a strong, independent retail sector and giving the UK industry a global identity has been extremely rewarding. This honour is for my entire family and colleagues as a lot of people have been with me on this journey.”
