AG Barr has proved that Irn Bru is still Scotland’s favourite drink, with sales hitting record levels in 2017.
The company, established in 1875 and based in Cumbernauld, reported its sharpest annual rise in sales of Irn Bru, which rose 8% in the year to 27 January.
The Irn Bru Xtra sugar-free version of the drink, which launched in 2016, sold the equivalent of 60 million cans during the year.
A new version of the drink was also launched earlier this year, containing almost half the sugar content of the original recipe ahead of the UK Government’s new sugar tax which is due to come into force in April.
Roger White, chief executive of AG Barr, commented, “The effort required across the whole business to deliver this commitment should not be underestimated and is testament to both the skill and commitment of our people, as well as the agility and effectiveness of our business model.
“We have a strong and flexible business model and a growing portfolio of brands, both established and nascent, which reflect the requirements of today’s changing consumers.
“We remain confident in our ability to capitalise on the opportunities to grow our business and deliver long-term value to shareholders.”
