They are famously known for their patter, but for one week only, Glasgow Taxis’ drivers are asking for some quiet to celebrate Book Week Scotland, which begins today.
Glasgow Taxis has partnered with Scottish Book Trust to help distribute free copies of the book Rebel to their passengers this week.
Speaking on behalf of the Glasgow Taxis committee, chairman Stephen Flynn, said: “Book Week Scotland is a great opportunity to encourage the people of Glasgow to get stuck into a good book.
“While we love to chat to our passengers, sometimes it’s hard for people to find the time to read, and a taxi journey can be an opportunity to do just that. Hopefully this initiative can help to rejuvenate the city’s love for books.
“We are delighted to show our support for this important campaign and hope our passengers enjoy reading Rebel – and the peace and quiet!”
The book contains 40 stories from the public and bestselling author Sara Sheridan, playwright and performer Jo Clifford, Book Week Scotland ambassador and forensic anthropologist Professor Dame Sue Black, and Gaelic writer David Eyre.
More than 100,000 copies of the book have been printed and it will also be available form libraries across the country.
Marc Lambert, CEO of Scottish Book Trust, said: “Scottish Book Trust is delighted to be working with Glasgow Taxis to spread the message of Book Week Scotland.
“We’re thrilled that drivers will share the Rebel book with their passengers, which contains real-life stories from a variety of cultures and backgrounds.
“We also hope this will prompt readers to check out our fantastic programme events that will run all week, both in the local community and online.”
