City of Glasgow College will field its largest ever team of students for this year’s WorldSkills UK Live National Finals.
In addition to the 75% increase in those attending the elite competition, the number of core skills have been expanded to include areas of economic growth and priority.
The aim of the 30 strong WorldSkills Team City will be to retain the college’s current number one ranking in the UK as they compete in their core disciplines which this year includes, for the first time; digital video production, fine jewellery making, media makeup: body, fashion and photographic makeup, and customer care.
Paul Little, Principal and Chief Executive of City of Glasgow College, and Lead Ambassador for WorldSkills in Scotland said:
“WorldSkills UK LIVE is the UK’s largest skills and careers event which helps shape the future of a new generation. Last year Scotland had two colleges in the top three while we brought home 16 medals and five Highly Commended overall, with our own City of Glasgow College coming top of the UK National Skills League table with seven medals and one Highly Commended.
“As an advocate for vocational excellence, I firmly believe these competitions help to improve skills levels and deliver economic growth. I am delighted that our college is fielding its strongest team yet and we hope, of course, to repeat our past successes.”
Margaret Darroch, Head of Skills Academy & Development at the College, said:
“It is fantastic that our numbers have increased so significantly, due in part to our intensive training and development programme, and mind-set boot camp which kicked off earlier this year. But these students have won their places in fiercely competitive heats through sheer hard work and determination together with high levels of skill.”
A total of 93 top apprentices and learners from 21 colleges and training providers across Scotland will compete at WorldSkills UK LIVE which takes place from 15 to 17 November at Birmingham’s NEC.
