Antiques Roadshow expert Anita Manning launches of Òran Mór’s magnificent new installation depicting Robert Burns’ epic poem Tam O’Shanter created by renowned Scottish artist Nichol Wheatley
Almost 300 people turned up on Monday evening for the launch of Oran Mor’s brand new ten painting commission depicting the tale of Burn’s epic poem Tam O’Shanter by renowned Scottish artist Nichol Wheatley.
The current President of the World Burns Federation, Bill Nolan opened the unveiling with a short rendition of Tam O’Shanter. Bill thanked Nichol Wheatley for “his spectacular contribution to the canon of art celebrating Burns.”
Anita Manning of Antiques Roadshow fame joined the star-studded event in celebrating the occasion. She spoke of her admiration of both Colin Beattie and Òran Mór, she said “Òran Mór is a wonderful centre of culture for Glasgow, it brings together the visual arts, theatre, literature and music, making them available to us, the ordinary guy.”
Nichol Wheatley was very gracious in his short dignified thank you to all who attended. Nichol is best known for large-scale murals, landscapes and his collaborative work with Alasdair Gray and other artists. Nichol says “This story has been in my head since I was taught the poem as a kid. I’ve always wanted to make these paintings and this commission has been a challenge and a delight.”
Owner of Oran Mor Colin Beattie finished off the proceedings by thanking Nichol for his “magnificent creations” that will now adorn the walls of Òran Mór and further cements Òran Mór’s philosophy of ‘Arts for All – All Year Round.’
Due to the success of the unveiling event, Òran Mór have arranged for Nichol Wheatley to be present in the Auditorium at Òran Mór on Wednesday 16th Jan (10am – 1pm) and Sat 26th Jan (10am - 1pm) for anyone who was unable to attend the launch. All are welcome.
