Join us for an evening of celebration and appreciation for the legacy of Adam Smith and his seminal work "The Wealth of Nations", at this special dinner event.
This event will provide a platform for individuals to learn about the ideas and theories that Adam Smith developed, which have had a profound impact on economics and modern society. We will explore the key themes of "The Wealth of Nations", including the division of labour, the concept of the invisible hand, and the importance of free markets.
Our guest speakers, Prof. Sir Anton Muscatelli of the University of Glasgow and Nicole Shamier, Economical Principal Consultant at Mott MacDonald ill provide insights into Adam Smith's theories and their application in contemporary economics, politics, and business today. You will have the opportunity to engage in thought-provoking discussions with other attendees and hear about practical examples of how these theories have been implemented in real-world situations.
This event will also celebrate the life and achievements of Adam Smith, and his association with the city of Glasgow, which saw him a student, Professor and finally Rector at the University of Glasgow.

Nicole Shamier, Assistant Director of Economics, Mott MacDonald
Nicole is an Assistant Director of Economics at Mott MacDonald. She has 14 years’ experience working in the public and private sector leading on the development of economic appraisal and business cases for investment. Before joining Mott MacDonald in December, Nicole worked in the UK Government’s Cabinet Office, and prior to this that she lived and worked for 6 years in a British Overseas Territory as St Helena Government’s Chief Economist. She returned to the UK last year and now calls Glasgow her home. Nicole has worked in a wide variety of economic fields including international economic development, small island economies, flood risk, water quality, and energy economics, tax, social security, communications and Fintec policy.
Prof. Sir Anton Mustcatelli, Principal and Vice Chancellor, University of Glasgow
Professor Sir Anton Muscatelli has been Principal and Vice-Chancellor, University of Glasgow since October 2009.
From 2007-2009 he was Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Heriot-Watt University. An economist, his research interests are monetary economics, central bank independence, fiscal policy, international finance and macroeconomics. Prior to 2007 he held various roles at the University of Glasgow including Vice-Principal - Strategy, Budgeting and Advancement (2004-07) and Daniel Jack Professor of Political Economy (1994-2007).
Sir Anton was Chair (2016-21) of Scotland’s First Minister’s Standing Council on Europe, a non-political group providing expert advice to Scottish ministers on Scotland’s relationship with the EU. He was a member of the Scottish Government’s Council of Economic Advisers 2015-21, and subsequently advised them on the National Strategy for Economic Transformation. He was an adviser to the House of Commons Treasury Select Committee on fiscal and monetary policy between 2007-10 and has advised the European Commission and the World Bank.
From 2017-20 he was Chair of the Russell Group of Universities, and between 2012-19 was a Board member of the Scottish Funding Council, which provides funding and oversight of Scotland’s Colleges and Universities.
Sir Anton was knighted in 2017 for services to economics and higher education and was awarded the honour of Knight Commander (Commendatore) by the Republic of Italy in 2008 for contributions to higher education and economic science. He holds an honorary degree from McGill University in Canada.
