Glasgow City Council have provided the following update on the progress of the George Square redevelopment:
"Since our last communication, works have commenced outside the hoarding in two key areas - West George Street and, more recently, the frontage of the City Chambers.
At West George Street, works are underway on the north footway between Buchanan Street and Dundas Street. To maintain traffic flow and support deliveries to premises at this section, the taxi rank waiting area on the south side has been temporarily relocated to Dundas Street. Completion of this section of footway is anticipated by early August.
At the City Chambers, works are being delivered in two phases: the first running from Cochrane Street to the front door, followed by the stretch from the front door to George Street. This phased approach will ensure uninterrupted access to the front entrance. For safety, the footway will be closed to pedestrian through-traffic during these works, with a diversion route in place via George Street - John Street - Cochrane Street.
Within George Square, the hoarding at the two western corners was adjusted to facilitate ground testing for the proposed statue locations. Graphic installations on the hoarding are scheduled for 30th July.
Site clearance works are also ongoing. Rainton Construction has been palletising reusable materials for future use in George Square and other city-wide projects. Additionally, the black masts previously used for decorative purposes within the square have now been removed.
Meanwhile, the GCC Communications Team has begun engaging with local businesses surrounding the square to develop a comprehensive wayfinding plan to support visitors during the construction period."
