Major bridge refurbishments on the M8 at Hillington Interchange continue with phase five commencing March 2026

Amey, on behalf of Transport Scotland, is undertaking a major bridge refurbishment project, including rail and slip road upgrades, on the M8 at Junction 26 (Hillington Interchange). These essential works, valued at approximately £9million, will be delivered over five phases from September 2025 until Spring 2026 and include significant repairs and upgrades to four key bridge structures, addressing vehicle parapets, structure waterproofing, safety barriers, and carriageway surfacing. 

PHASE FIVE 

Phase Five will take place from Tuesday 10th March until Monday 11th May 2026 under a 2+2 contraflow. The overnight closures (9pm – 6am) of the M8 Junction 26 westbound off-slip road and the Junction 25A westbound off-slip road will continue for the duration of Phase Five, as well as overnight closures of local authority roads on Hillington Interchange.  

Traffic for the M8 Junction 26 westbound off-slip road will be diverted as follows: 

• Traffic will be instructed to continue to the westbound M8 Junction 27 off slip, take 4th exit at roundabout and follow Renfrew Rd northbound to the next roundabout to join the M8 eastbound and exit to re-join the M8 westbound.  

Traffic for the M8 Junction 25A westbound off-slip road will be diverted as follows: 

• Traffic will be instructed to continue on the M8 westbound and will exit via the Junction 26 off-slip road onto the Hillington Interchange, from here traffic will turn right onto Hillington Road. Traffic will then join King's Inch Road to be diverted right onto Old Govan Road, where diversion will end. When J26 is closed at the same time vehicles will follow same diversion as above for J26 westbound off-slip closure 

Weekend Closure: M8 Junction 26 Westbound Off-Slip Road 

This work will also require a full weekend closure of the M8 Junction 26 westbound off slip from 8pm on Friday 8th May until 6am on Monday 11th May 2026.  

During this weekend closure traffic will be diverted as follows: 

• Traffic will be instructed to exit via J25 westbound off-slip road to Braehead, from here traffic will turn left on to old Govan Road. Traffic will then be diverted left on to Kings Inch Road and follow to Hillington Interchange were the diversion will end. 

A 40mph speed limit remains in effect throughout the project's duration, with average speed cameras in operation, ensuring the safety of the workforce and the travelling public as 24/7 construction work will take place. Overnight closures will be required for traffic management installation and changes as the project progresses; these will be communicated in advance on swtrunkroads.scot. Recovery vehicles will also be on-site. 

Since the commencement of this project, reported delays for road users have been negligible outwith typical congestion on this section of the M8 during AM and PM commuter peaks. 

Retail outlets in the Hillington area, including Braehead Shopping Centre, will be operating as normal with trading hour details available from their associated websites and social media channels. Any road closures required have been planned with a later start time to mitigate disruption to shoppers. 

Unfortunately, construction noise will be unavoidable for the duration of works. Suitable noise dampening measures will be implemented on-site overnight when undertaking works. 

During this phase abnormal loads can travel in both directions between Junction 27 and 26. 

Access for emergency service vehicles will be maintained throughout these works. 

This scheme has been planned in consultation with Transport Scotland, Traffic Scotland, the emergency services, Renfrewshire Council, Glasgow City Council, West Dunbartonshire Council, and Braehead Shopping Centre.  

Please note, all schemes are weather dependent and may be cancelled or rescheduled if weather conditions are not favourable. 

Road users are thanked for their patience and understanding while this work is being undertaken. Advice is to allow extra time to complete any journeys during this period, using alternative routes where possible. Various road network improvements are taking place across the M8 corridor through Glasgow and these should be considered in any journey planning.
