Co-Parenting Apps in Scotland: A tool to help separated parents work together

Separation or divorce can be emotionally challenging for families, especially when children are involved. For parents who share responsibilities after separation, communication and organisation are critical.

In recent years, co-parenting apps have become an effective tool for helping separated parents coordinate schedules, share information about their children, and reduce conflict when other forms of communication have broken down.

What are Co-Parenting Apps?

Co-parenting apps are digital tools designed specifically for separated parents to help manage shared parenting. Both parents can download the app, allowing them to manage parenting arrangements and communicate in a structured way.

Typical features include:

  • Shared parenting calendars
  • Secure messaging between parents
  • Expense tracking for shared costs
  • Document storage for school or medical information
  • Notifications and reminders
  • Record keeping that can be used in mediation or court.
Why Co-Parenting Apps are useful

Where there has been a breakdown in communication between separated parents, co-parenting apps can assist with a more child-focused approach to parenting. Effective communication is essential for childcare arrangements to work, with some apps flagging negative language in messages and suggesting more neutral alternatives to ensure productive communication and reduce conflict. It can be reassuring to parents to have the use of a secure platform for communication, providing a record of messages that cannot be edited or deleted. Records are stored and time-stamped and can be used in legal proceedings.

Shared calendars avoid confusion over scheduling and help parents keep track of school events, holidays, and contact arrangements. This can avoid conflicts that often arise due to the stress of managing plans across separate households.

There are several co-parenting apps available to parents in the UK. Some are free, while others offer paid subscriptions with additional features. When choosing an app, parents may want to consider the cost of the app, the communication features, whether records can be used in court if needed and ease of use.

Co-parenting apps can offer a practical way to manage shared responsibilities, reduce misunderstanding and assist parents with bringing the focus back to the wellbeing of their children, where both parents are willing.

Whilst co-parenting apps can assist with communication issues between separated parents, they do not necessarily resolve contact disputes and direct communication between parents is not appropriate in every situation, for example, where there are allegations of domestic abuse.
