Scottish Water: Emergency Sewer Repair - Pollokshaws Road

Scottish Water is carrying out an emergency sewer repair on Pollokshaws Road in Shawlands, Glasgow.

A damaged trap has been causing internal flooding to a property on the corner with Minard Road. Due to the depth of the damaged section of pipework - approximately five metres - we are using specialist machinery to excavate.

This requires a lane closure so traffic management has been deployed between Moss-Side Road and Langside Avenue/Minard Road to ensure our teams and road users are kept safe while the work progresses.

We are anticipating it taking until early October to complete the repair and reinstate the road and pavement.

Given the location - on a busy commuter route at a main junction - we appreciate there will be disruption and inevitable delays. We can only thank all affected for their patience and understanding while we carry out the repair.

We will keep our website regularly updated on progress at www.scottishwater.co.uk/PollokshawsRoad

UPDATE - 05/09/2024

Scottish Water has arranged for the temporary traffic lights to be manually controlled between 7.00 am and 7.00 pm for the duration of the work.

They have also organised additional hours for the lights to be manned before and after the Scotland v Poland football match at Hampden Park.

UPDATE - 09/09/2024

We are making progress on the excavation although this has been complicated by the presence of a large number of other services.

We are using a specialist piece of equipment – a Vacuum Excavator – which allows the work to safely continue while drastically reducing the chances of damaging other infrastructure.

Traffic management arrangements remain in place however we are looking to increase pedestrian access along adjacent footpaths where possible.

We would like to again thank everyone affected for their patience and understanding. We will continue to work with them to complete the repair as quickly and safely as possible.

UPDATE - 13/09/2024

Good progress is being made and we have now excavated down to the damaged section of pipework. Work will continue over the weekend, including further CCTV surveys.

We also have reopened the pavement to allow pedestrian access past the works.

Once again, we would like to thank residents and road users for their patience and understanding.

UPDATE - 17/09/2024

Work has been progressing extremely well and we are close to completing the necessary patch-lining of the damaged section of sewer.

CCTV surveys show no further damage, so we hope to have backfilled the excavation, reinstated the pavement and removed all traffic management by the beginning of the September weekend.

Given the location and the fact Pollokshaws Road is a major commuter route we appreciate any disruption can be frustrating. We are therefore extremely grateful for everyone’s patience and understanding over the past few weeks.

UPDATE - 25/09/2024

Scottish Water is carrying out the final reinstatement of the road and pavement and will remove all traffic management by mid-morning tomorrow (Thursday) – nearly three weeks earlier than we had anticipated.

It has been a challenging repair – the damaged sewer was five metres below ground – and given the location some disruption was inevitable for road users and local businesses.

We are grateful to everyone who has worked with us to allow us to carry out the repair quickly and as always, their patience and understanding is appreciated.
