The city centre is the heartbeat of Glasgow’s economy, but it’s still facing challenges. Footfall hasn’t yet returned to pre-COVID levels, and a vibrant night-time economy is vital for the city’s resurgence. Ensuring people can travel easily and safely is key to this success.
Our research shows that taxi and private hire car availability, especially during peak times, plays a major role in the success of the city centre. Glasgow is the only UK city to operate a cap on private hire cars, limiting options for late-night visitors to get home. This isn’t just inconvenient—it’s actively deterring people from coming into town. This is something we cannot afford if we want to see growth and vitality return to Glasgow.
At the same time, we’re fully aware of the pressures facing the black cab sector—from the costs of EV taxis to the challenges of LEZ compliance. Black cabs remain a vital part of Glasgow’s transport network and must be supported as part of the city’s wider effort to provide safe, reliable, and convenient ways for people to get home.
There is consultation about whether we need a cap on taxis in Glasgow. This is an important step in tackling these issues and we encourage all Chamber of Commerce members to participate, share their insights, and voice any concerns they may have.
The consultation can be viewed using the following link: Current Consultations - Glasgow City Council - please note the consultation closes on Wednesday 28 May 2025.
