Approaching two years and looking at two achievements, two learnings and goals for future

By Heather Geddes, Membership Executive

I’m approaching my two-year anniversary at Glasgow Chamber as Membership Executive, and I can’t help but reflect on my last two years and what has happened in my life both in work and personally. I wanted to look back at two things I’ve achieved, two things I’ve learned and two things I hope to achieve over the next two years and hopefully this will hold me accountable to make these things happen!

My two years at Glasgow Chamber has opened me up to the world of business that I never knew existed before. Being at the Chamber has allowed me to merge all my skills from previous jobs into one role, as well as being able to attend networking events, connect with different businesses from across Glasgow and beyond and be in the know with what is happening around the city (which is great as I am particularly nosey).

My achievements and learnings

As part of my role, I regularly attend networking events and one thing I wanted to mention that I have achieved is the number of networking events I have attended over the past two years. I decided to add up all the events I have attended since starting in the Chamber and found that I have been to approximately 100. Wow!

From attending all these events, I have learned that being talkative and sociable isn’t all that you need to be to network successfully. When I began in the Chamber, I thought this role would be perfect as I could ‘talk to a brick wall’ but I soon realised that it was so much more than that. I’ve enhanced my communication, networking, and interpersonal skills as well as meeting and developing relationships with so many wonderful people over the two years.

Personally, my most recent achievement is that I got ENGAGED to Mark! I honestly didn’t think I’d see the day. As the old saying goes, you have to kiss a few frogs!

One thing I’ve learned from getting engaged and being in a long-term relationship, is that it’s NOT all about me, which was a shock to my system! But in all seriousness, I have learned that communication, compromise and learning to share your space with someone are also skills that transfer into work life.

Future Goals

Looking to the future, over the next couple of years, I hope to expand my network, meet many more great people, and develop and learn new skills. Personally, I’m hoping to get onto the property ladder by the end of this year and plan our wedding!

Finally, a little plug for the Chamber of course. We have lots of exciting things coming up and are here to support your business as much as we can. You can connect with me on LinkedIn here and drop me a message or you can email membership@glasgowchamberofcommerce.com with any questions you may have.

I look forward to hearing about your achievements and goals.
