Essential skills, experience and qualifications
Skills, Knowledge, and Aptitudes:
- Cultural Sensitivity: Understanding and respect for the cultural needs of the Chinese elderly community.
- Communication Skills: Ability to communicate clearly and empathetically with elderly individuals. Fluency in spoken and written Cantonese Chinese and English is essential. Knowledge of Mandarin Chinese is an advantage but not essential.
- The requirement for fluency in spoken and written Cantonese Chinese and English is a genuine necessity for this role due to the specific needs of the community we serve. The Wing Hong Centre primarily supports elderly individuals from the Chinese community in Glasgow, many of whom are Cantonese speakers with limited proficiency in English. Clear communication in their native language is essential to effectively address their health and well-being concerns, ensure they understand the services we provide, and make them feel comfortable and supported. Written Chinese is necessary for creating accessible materials, such as leaflets and newsletters, ensuring that our service users understand and engage with the services we offer. Many of our elderly members rely on written communication to stay informed about our services and community events. Moreover, the ability to communicate in English is equally crucial for the Support Worker role to liaise with other service providers, stakeholders, and partners who may not speak Cantonese. This bilingual requirement ensures that the Worker can bridge the language gap between our service users and external agencies, which is vital for the success of our initiatives.
- Organisational Skills: Basic ability to plan and organise activities and events.
- Teamwork: Willingness to work collaboratively with colleagues and volunteers.
- Flexibility: Openness to adapting to changing needs and schedules.
Experience:
- Community Involvement: Any experience, whether paid or voluntary, in community activities, events, or group settings.
- Activity Participation: Experience participating in or helping to organise activities, even informally, such as at school, community groups, or family events.

- Empathy and Compassion: Demonstrated empathy and compassion in everyday interactions.
- Reliability: Ability to maintain consistent attendance and punctuality.
- Health and Safety Awareness: Awareness of basic safety considerations when interacting with others.
