Job Description
As a Trainee Community Development Worker, your primary role will be to engage and support the local community in alignment with the Scottish Pantry Network’s mission of reducing food insecurity and fostering community resilience. You will work closely with community members, helping to identify their needs and collaborate on initiatives that promote social inclusion, skills development, and access to healthy food.
This role is pivotal to our wider aims of empowering individuals and creating sustainable, community-led solutions. You will be involved in various projects, including our training kitchen and meal kit programs, where you’ll help train and support local residents, ensuring they have the skills needed to actively participate in and benefit from our services. This role not only contributes to the immediate needs of the community but also helps to build long-term capacity and resilience, supporting the Scottish Pantry Network’s vision of a stronger, more connected society.
Please note this is a work placement opportunity for the duration of 25 weeks
Key Responsibilities
- Community Engagement:
- Engage with local community members to understand their needs, concerns, and aspirations.
- Build positive relationships with individuals and groups to encourage participation in community projects.
- Act as a point of contact for community members, providing information and support as needed.
- Support and Delivery of Projects:
- Assist in the planning, organisation, and delivery of community development projects, such as meal kits and training kitchen sessions.
- Support the training of local residents in relevant skills and practices, helping them to participate effectively in these initiatives.
- Help to set up and manage community events and activities, ensuring they run smoothly and safely.
- Collaboration and Networking:
- Work closely with colleagues, volunteers, and partner organisations to deliver community development programmes.
- Participate in meetings, training sessions, and workshops as part of a wider team effort.
- Assist in identifying and developing new opportunities for community engagement and partnerships.
- Monitoring and Reporting:
- Keep accurate records of activities, attendance, and outcomes related to community projects.
- Assist in gathering feedback from participants and stakeholders to assess the impact of projects.
- Contribute to reports and updates on community development activities, highlighting successes and areas for improvement.
- Personal Development:
- Take part in training and development opportunities provided by the organisation to build your skills and knowledge.
- Seek feedback and guidance to improve performance and effectiveness in the role.
- Actively contribute to a positive and supportive team environment.
- Health and Safety:
- Follow all health and safety guidelines during community activities and events.
- Assist in ensuring a safe environment for all participants and volunteers.
- Report any health and safety concerns or incidents to the appropriate person.

- A basic understanding of community development principles and practices.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team and independently when required.

- Basic organisational skills, including time management and task prioritisation.
- Experience:
- No formal experience required, but a demonstrated interest in community work, volunteering, or engagement in local projects is essential.
- Competencies:
- Empathy and cultural sensitivity, with a commitment to inclusivity and equality.
- Reliability and a strong sense of responsibility.
- Ability to follow instructions and complete tasks to a high standard.
- Motivation to develop new skills and undertake training.

- An understanding of health and safety practices in a community setting.
Number of Hours Per Week 22 hours for 25 weeks
Working pattern and contracted hours (including any shift patterns)
Monday – Friday (10 am - 3 pm)

Details of Training Provided
Trainee will receive a certificated food hygiene training. Trainee will shadow all staff for the 1st few weeks to get a comprehensive overview of what we all do.
When delivering any groups, the trainee will be shadowing to assess their confidence and self-esteem.
Support & supervision within 4-6 week period as this will help to identify training for employee development.
